Château de Saurs - Vineyard
Château de Saurs - Vineyard

Château de Saurs’ vineyards are planted along the hillsides which overlook the right bank of the Tarn river. Our “Appellation d’Origine Controlée” (AOC) wines today cover an area of 42 hectares.

The Soil

A good balance of clayey and clayey limestone soils on the upper slopes contribute to the wine’s elegance and subtlety. This is coupled with gravelly and clay-alluvium soil below which brings charm, fruit and strength.

The Domain

With complementary soils, south facing vineyards and an exceptionally sunny microclimate, the Saurs domain is in one of the most favourable positions of any Gaillac vineyard, allowing it to fully express the true qualities of this region’s wines.

Surface Area

30% of Château de Saurs vines are over 20 years old. Replanting is done in successive five hectare tranches, ensuring the balance of grape varieties remains constant. The last replanting was done in 2000.
The Chateau’s vineyard covers 42 hectares of Gaillac AOC vines, broken down as follows:

4 ha of white grape varieties

  • Mauzac (the oldest Gaillac grape variety)
  • Loin de l’oeil (typical local variety)
  • Sauvignon

38 ha of red grape varieties

  • Duras (one of the oldest Gaillac grape varieties, reintroduced 20 years ago).
  • Fer Servadou (or Braucol)
  • Syrah
  • Merlot
  • Gamay
